Why am I passionate about this?

I first became aware of the 1920s through movies such as Some Like it Hot and Thoroughly Modern Millie. I was immediately attracted to what I call the “Booze, beads, and boas.” I felt a kinship with the flappers who were experiencing freedom from the restrictions of the Victorian Era and living their best lives. They were making their own rules and doing it with style! As professor of library science, I researched the history of the American public library and of women in the 1850s-1920s. Today, I write historical cozy mysteries to live out my own glamorous flapper dreams.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of Partners in Crime

Suzanne Stauffer Why I love this book

I first read this book when I was in my twenties, the same age as Tommy and Tuppence (Prudence) Beresford, the protagonists.

I immediately wanted to be Tuppence and married to Tommy! The two of them are young and adventurous in post-WWI London. They not only solve mysteries, but Tuppence does it while wearing fabulous 1920s outfits that I can only dream about.

I also love the relationship between the two of them as partners in crime and life. Tommy is more level-headed, and Tuppence is more imaginative and creative. Together they make the perfect detective team – and married couple.

I was thrilled to discover that there were four more books in the series.

By Agatha Christie ,

Why should I read it?

2 authors picked Partners in Crime as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

Six short stories from the Queen of Crime, featuring our favourite young detectives, Tommy and Tuppence.

Tommy and Tuppence Beresford were restless for adventure, so when they were asked to take over Blunt's International Detective Agency, they leapt at the chance.

After their triumphant recovery of a pink pearl, intriguing cases kept on coming their way: a stabbing on Sunningdale golf course; cryptic messages in the personal columns of newspapers; and even a box of poisoned chocolates.

Carry On, Jeeves

By P. G. Wodehouse ,

Book cover of Carry On, Jeeves

Suzanne Stauffer Why I love this book

I was first introduced to Wodehouse when PBS aired the BBC adaptations starring Hugh Laurie as the silly ass, Bertie Wooster, and Stephen Fry as his gentleman’s gentleman, Jeeves.

As soon as I stopped laughing, I started looking for the books, most of which are collections of short stories. Published in 1925, Carry On, Jeeves is the third in the series, but it includes the story of how Bertie came to hire Jeeves, so it’s a good place to start.

I find the stories, which satirize the idle rich of London of the 1920s, incredibly funny, but never cruel or mean. Bertie means well. He’s just an idiot. Jeeves calmly and expertly comes to the rescue. We could all use a Jeeves in our lives.

Carry On, Jeeves

By P. G. Wodehouse ,

What is this book about?

The peerless Jeeves makes his first appearance in this magical collection of ten short stories, in which he extricates the chronically befuddled Bertie Wooster from countless jams with formidable aunts, brainy girls, unbidden guests, and pals in a bind. This collection includes the first story to feature both Jeeves and Bertie Wooster THE ARTISTIC CAREER OF CORKY.

Book cover of Mapp and Lucia

Suzanne Stauffer Why I love this book

Another series of novels that I was introduced to through PBS and the BBC, and another that had me laughing hysterically.

This is the fourth in the series, but it brings together Miss Mapp and Mrs. “Lucia” Lucas as social rivals. I adore both women, although I would not want to have to work with either of them!

I love the English country setting, the competition between the two women for leadership, the eccentric secondary characters, and the clothes and the food and the music.

To be honest, I have worked with women like them at different times in my life. I think that’s why I love the books so much, as I get to laugh at them from the sidelines this time.

Why should I read it?

3 authors picked Mapp and Lucia as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it.

What is this book about?

"Mapp and Lucia" is the centrepiece of E.F. Benson's series of Lucia novels - bringing together for the first time the eponymous middle-aged doyennes of polite 1930s society Miss Elizabeth Mapp and Emmeline Luca (Lucas to her friends). Lucia, recently widowed, is the newcomer to the village of Tilling and eager to wrest the reins of social supremacy from the incumbant Miss Mapp and install herself as its benevolent dictator. In their polite acts of sabotage and ruthless jockeying for the position of cultural arbiter Mapp and Lucia tear up the conventions of drawing-room bridge evenings as their deadly weapons.…

Book cover of The Thin Man

Suzanne Stauffer Why I love this book

I love the setting and atmosphere of the book, first and foremost. New York City in 1932, just before the end of Prohibition, so there are still bootleggers and gangsters and all that jazz (literally).

I love the characters of Nick and Nora Charles – witty, sophisticated, glamorous, and living a life I can only dream of (literally – I was born 50 years too late!). While it has its humorous elements, this is a hardboiled detective story.

I love the contrast between Nick and Nora and the underworld characters that they encounter, as well as the strong undertone of cynicism that runs through it. It feels more like real life than many other detective stories, where everything is resolved by the end.

Book cover of The Great Gatsby

Suzanne Stauffer Why I love this book

I love the absolutely authentic atmosphere of this book – the clothes, the music, the booze -- and the exploration of the dark side of the 1920s.

I find some of the characters sympathetic, some repellent, and some impossible to understand, just as in real life. Regardless, I feel that I really get to know them by the end of the book, even if I still don’t understand them. I can’t help but make comparisons with that time period and now, a century later. So much has changed, yet so much remains the same.

I’ll be honest that it can be a depressing read, so I have to be in the right mood for it, but when I am, nothing else will satisfy.
